BASIC FUNCTION:
The individual in this position jointly supports the Bus and Rail Programs and is responsible for organizing activities of select APTA bus and rail committees, standards groups, conference sessions, and other initiatives. The position requires project management skills as well as extensive communication and interaction with APTA members and transit industry stakeholders.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Serve as staff advisor to various APTA committees. Duties include engaging with committee officers and members; helping to organize virtual and in-person meetings by developing and posting agendas, arranging meeting logistics, helping to facilitate meetings, and carrying out meeting follow-up. Work also includes maintaining committee rosters and bylaws, and, as appropriate, working with committee leadership to develop work plans and advance progress on committee initiatives;
- Provide support for rail and/or bus standards working groups under the APTA standards development program. Activities include developing agendas and lists of action items; scheduling meetings and overseeing meeting arrangements; communicating with members; tracking progress on standards development, including balloting, managing the budget, and handling expense reports from in-person meetings; and, as appropriate, traveling to and staffing in-person meetings;
- Provide support for sessions at major APTA conferences, including the Mobility, Rail, and TRANSform. This includes helping to develop session content and identify presenters; communicating and arranging meetings with speakers and moderators; managing session logistics; and staffing sessions at APTA conferences;
- Provide timely support for APTAConnect, an online resource for APTA members, by updating the bus and rail committees’ community pages with current information and documents, event listings, and discussion posts;
- Respond in a timely fashion to inquiries related to the rail and bus programs from members and outside stakeholders, with guidance from the directors as needed;
- Support other bus and rail initiatives as needed, including peer reviews, surveys, webinars, and APTA website updates; and
- Other duties as assigned.
MEASURES OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Extent to which working groups, committees, conferences, and workshops are planned and conducted in a timely, organized, and professional manner;
- Extent to which other assigned projects are completed in a timely manner;
- Demonstration of high-quality, professional, and pleasant support for, and communications to, a diverse audience of APTA members, government representatives, the public, and other stakeholders in the transit industry;
- Demonstrated ability to function as a member of a team and willingness to support other staff during periods of heavy workload; and
- Attention to detail in planning, communications, and logistics when managing multiple projects and meeting multiple deadlines.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Requirements include a bachelor’s degree or 2-4 years of project management experience in public transportation or a related field. Specific expertise with bus or rail transit programs or operations is a plus. Must have strong project management skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to multitask and work effectively with others, as well as independently, ability to travel to conferences and meetings, and a passion for engaging with and providing high-quality service to APTA members and the transit industry.

The annual base starting salary is anticipated to be in the range of $56,400 to $75,199.
This position is based in Washington D.C. and currently operates on a hybrid work schedule. Employees are required to work in the office on two specific days, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the flexibility to choose a third in-office day. The remaining two days of the work week can be worked remotely. Please note that this schedule may be adjusted at any time based on the Association’s needs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK CONDITIONS:
This role requires the ability to use hands and fingers for handling or feeling objects, and the capacity to stand, walk, sit, reach, and communicate effectively. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
