APTA Study Missions:
Invitation to Join APTA Delegation on Fare Collection Study Tour to Asia
Continuing a tradition of exploring and learning from public transportation systems around the globe, APTA will conduct a study mission to Hong Kong, Korea, and Japan in June 2008. The ten-day trip, open to both public and private sector APTA members, will focus on fare collection with an emphasis on electronic payment systems and innovations. APTA invites interested members to join the delegation by contacting Jessica Bechir, APTA’s program manager for international programs, at 202-496-4833 or jbechir@apta.com
Participants in the study mission will meet in Hong Kong on Sunday, June 15 and conclude their program in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday, June 25. In addition to meeting with fare systems professionals in those two cities, the group will also visit the transit system in Seoul, South Korea.

Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Study Missions:
The International Transit Studies Program (ITSP) conducts two missions each year to provide transit managers from across the US the opportunity to examine public transportation practices in other countries and regions. The program is sponsored by the Transit Cooperative Research Program, funded by the Federal Transit Administration, and managed by the Eno Foundation.
Spring 2008: "Transit's Role in Addressing Global Climate Change"
Proponents of public transportation highlight the positive impact transit can have on areas affected by air pollution, traffic congestion, and other consequences of heavy reliance on personal automobiles. Rising energy prices and concern about global climate change strengthen the case for investing in transit. At the same time, the environmental footprint of the transit industry itself is attracting serious interest. Public transportation has been cast as an integral part of the sustainable communities of the future, and agencies are expected to "go green" in the construction and operation of their systems.
The ITSP spring 2008 mission team will travel to Europe to meet with transit leaders who have pioneered environmentally sensitive practices in their operations and the development of new projects and have worked to integrate transit into community land use planning. Topics to be addressed include: energy conservation, emissions, power sources and supplies, alternative fuels, heavy recyclables, green capital facilities, transit's possible role in a carbon reduction regime, etc. Team members will assess the costs of going green and the impact on efficiency in operations.
The spring mission will take place over a two-week period during the months March through June, 2008.
Fall 2008: "Balancing Infrastructure Reinvestment with System Expansion"
The mission team will travel to Australia to learn about transit systems of various sizes, where managers have faced tough resource allocation decisions in the face of competing demands to upgrade existing facilities and services and develop new capacity. Agencies will be identified that are committed to operating on both the reinvestment and expansion "tracks" and have a record of managing effectively. Special attention would be given to small starts and the development of regional rail service. Team members will study techniques used in planning, budgeting, financing, organizational design, project management, and communications with staff and the public. This second mission of 2008 will be held during a two-week period in September-November.
