Big Blue Bus Celebrates 80 Years in Santa Monica

Eighty years ago, bus service in Santa Monica, CA, cost a nickel, only traveled the main streets, and operated with six rented buses.

Today, the Santa Monica Big Blue Bus has is celebrating its 80th year of operation with a fleet of more than 200 vehicles powered by alternative fuels, transporting more than 80,000 daily riders throughout a 52-square-mile service area.

Big Blue Bus marked the anniversary with a celebration April 14, where the agency honored longtime employees and shared a giant bus-shaped cake with the public. The event also featured live music and giveaways of transit-themed souvenirs.
