This Week in Passenger Transport
March 17, 2008
Perhaps greeting Andrew Clarke, president of the League of American Bicyclists, with a sustained cheer of “An-dy, An-dy, An-dy” was par for the course when nearly 500 pro-biking advocates gathered in Washington for their National Bike Summit, March 4 to 6.
The enthusiastic crowd at the Amphitheater of the Ronald Reagan Building gave sustained and repeated applause to the first speaker at the opening session, U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR). He noted that the American Society of Civil Engineers gave a “D” grade to America’s infrastructure, but added, “That’s only because they are grading on a curve.”
Blumenauer continued: “In 320 days, no matter who is elected president, the U.S. will join the rest of the world to confront global warming and climate change.” He added: “Part of the challenge is to end discrimination against those who would burn calories rather than fossil fuel. What’s the logic and the equity to that?”
