Study: Public Transportation Use Cuts Carbon Emissions

This Week in Passenger Transport

March 10, 2008

Households located close to a bus or rail line are the most energy-efficient households in America, according to a report released today by APTA.

The study, titled Broadening the Connection Between Public Transportation and Energy Conservation, shows that people who live close to transit drive an average of 4,400 fewer miles annually than similar households with no access to transit. On a larger scale, it demonstrates that communities that choose to invest in public transportation reduce the nation’s carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons annually—an amount equivalent to the electricity used by 4.9 million households, more than in each of the states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina.
