This Week in Passenger Transport
March 3, 2008
State legislators in Minnesota voted Feb. 25 to override a veto by Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty of a bill that raises the state gas tax, increases registration fees for new cars and trucks, and boosts the state sales tax in several communities to fund transportation projects. The state will use the tax and fee increases to fund $6.6 billion in transit, road, and bridge construction projects over the next 10 years.
The Minnesota House of Representatives voted 91 to 41 to override Pawlenty’s veto of the bill, followed by an override vote of 47 to 20 in the state Senate.
The vote comes six months after the Aug. 1, 2007, collapse of the Interstate 35 West Bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, which killed killing 13 people and injured 100.
