More Than 600 Transit Leaders Convene In Washington

More than 600 members of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) will convene in Washington, DC at the APTA Legislative Conference March 12-13 to discuss a variety of topics including: financing challenges facing our nation’s surface transportation system; the impact of President Bush’s FY 2008 budget proposal on transit, the future of transit, SAFETEA-LU reauthorization, a special "look into the future" with prominent members of theNational Surface Transportation Finance and Revenue Study Commission, and much more. On Tuesday afternoon, March 13, the 600+ APTA members will visit their congressional representatives.

As part of this year’s Legislative Conference, APTA members will hear from top administration officials – Mary E. Peters, secretary, U.S. Department of Transportation; Rodney E. Slater, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation, and partner, Patton Boggs LLP; and James S. Simpson, administrator, Federal Transit Administration (FTA). Congressional members scheduled to attend include: Representative Earl Blumenauer, (D-OR), member, Committee on Ways and Means; Representative Peter DeFazio, (D-OR), chair, Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure; Representative Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD), majority leader, U.S. House of Representatives; Representative John L. Mica (R-FL), ranking member, Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure; Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), chairman, Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies, Committee on Appropriations; and Representative James L. Oberstar, (D-MN), chairman, Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
