San Jose, California -- October 9-11, 2006

From October 9-11, North American public transportation officials will convene at the 2006 American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Annual Meeting at the Convention Center in San Jose, CA. This year, APTA expects nearly 2,000 public transportation leaders to attend the conference which will address all aspects of this $42 billion industry.

Issues that will be covered at the conference include: the impact of high gas prices on public transit ridership; the "greening" of public transit systems; managing transit security and disaster risk exposure; technology management and the importance of technology in the public transit industry, including emerging security technologies; transit-oriented development's link to affordable housing; building grassroots support for public transportation; and the latest on APTA's industry standards.

In addition, APTA and the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will offer a variety of technical tours that will highlight the best in public transit innovation at VTA and SamTrans on Tuesday, October 10.

News media are invited to attend the conference at no charge. Some of the speaker highlights include the following:

  • On October 9, at the Monday Opening Session, former Department of Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta will receive the prestigious APTA Lifetime Achievement Award.

  • Best-selling author and leading management consultant, Dr. Oren Harari, will address the General Session on Tuesday morning from 9-10.

  • On Tuesday morning from 10:15-11:45 members from the congressionally-mandated National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Commission will share thoughts on the financing strategies for public transportation. With the highway trust fund expected to be bankrupt in FY 2009 and the Mass Transit Account also expected to be bankrupt shortly later, this is an important look at financing strategies for the future.

  • APTA Awards Ceremony will take place on Tuesday from 11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m. Awards are given to this year's winners - dedicated and visionary leaders and organizations that have made significant contributions to the public transportation industry.
