Dear Chairman Stevens and Ranking Member Inouye:

On behalf of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and its more than 1,500 member organizations, I write to convey APTA's support for the nomination of Mary Peters to be Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). APTA's members are deeply concerned about the future of our nation's surface transportation system, and they recognize the need for outstanding leadership at the federal level during this important time.

Mary Peters distinguished herself during her service as the administrator of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and earlier as director of the Arizona Department of Transportation. APTA has great confidence in Ms. Peters' ability to consider innovative policy solutions to our transportation challenges. She has demonstrated superior leadership in a diverse range of important subjects, and she recognizes the intermodal nature of our transportation networks.

APTA urges the committee to approve the nomination of Mary Peters as quickly as possible, as the Department of Transportation needs a leader of her caliber. Please have your staff contact me if I can provide any further information on this matter.

Sincerely yours,

William W. Millar signature
