Invitation For Nominations

January 29, 2008

Dear APTA Business Member:

(Download In Adobe PDF Format)

I invite you to submit an expression of interest to represent APTA’s business members on the APTA Business Member Board of Governors (BMBG) or as a business member representative on the APTA Board of Directors. Under the nominating procedures established for APTA and the BMBG, the BMBG’s nominating committee proposes business members to serve in both capacities.  At this time, they seek candidates for consideration for the following positions in 2008:

  • Chair of the business member board of governors for a term of two years,
  • First Vice Chair of the business member board of governors for a term of two years,
  • Second Vice Chair of the business member board of governors for a term of two years,
  • Thirteen members to serve two-year terms on the business member board of governors,
  • Four members to serve two-year terms as at-large members on the APTA Board of Directors
  • A member to serve the remainder of a term as a regional director on the APTA Board of Directors from Canada and one member to serve the remainder of a term as a regional director from Region VI (Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, California, Alaska, Hawaii).

Based on our experience in prior years, it is likely that other business member positions on the APTA Board of Directors or the BMBG will become vacant during the year. The names submitted during this nomination period will be used by the BMBG nominating committee to select nominees to fill the remainder of the term for positions which become vacant during 2008.

The BMBG sets the course and direction for APTA business member activities.  The BMBG board meets three times per year, typically in conjunction with major APTA meetings.  In addition, the BMBG holds a three-day annual business meeting in January to set its direction for the coming year. Attendance and participation are required, and those directors who do not meet the attendance policy established in the BMBG bylaws, will be automatically removed from the BMBG. While directors are required to attend the BMBG’s annual business meeting and one other meeting or three other meetings called by the chair in the same calendar year, regular and active participation in APTA committees and BMBG meetings is also essential in fulfilling the role of a board member.

The APTA Board of Directors is the chief policy making body for APTA, and the board meets two times per year during the annual meeting and legislative conference.

Attached to this letter is a list of principles and attributes the BMBG seeks from individuals who apply for these positions. The BMBG strongly encourages its members to support the participation of senior level women and minorities in its programs, and increased representation of small and mid-sized APTA member firms is desired.

Applications to represent the business members on both the BMBG and APTA Board of Directors will be reviewed and selected by the BMBG nominating committee chaired by Kim Green, past chair of the BMBG.  The nominating committee will present its slate of BMBG nominees to the business members at its meeting in June, during the APTA Rail Conference in San Francisco, and will submit its slate for the board of directors to APTA's nominating committee at the appropriate time.

Please note that nominations for business member positions on the APTA Board of Directors must be submitted now, not during the nomination period for other APTA elected offices. Please note the application MUST be signed by the CEO of your company signifying agreement by your company to the requirements outlined on the application. Also note that a personal resume/bio MUST be attached to your application. Applications that fail to meet either of these requirements will not be considered.

If you are interested in serving on the BMBG or as a business member representative on the APTA Board of Directors, please fill out the attached nomination form and return it to APTA. NOMINATING FORMS MUST BE RETURNED TO APTA NO LATER THAN 5 p.m. EST ON Monday, March 3, 2008.  NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Fran Hooper, APTA’s BMBG staff advisor, at 202-496-4876 or fhooper@apta.com.

I hope you are interested in representing APTA’s business members. We need good people to apply, people who are interested in helping lead the transit industry in the years ahead and we are committed to enhancing diversity in our activities at APTA.

Sincerely yours,

Delon Hampton Signature
