An APTA Business Member Program
In September 2003, APTA's Business Member
Board of Governors announced a new initiative called the Adopt-A-District
program, designed to step up direct communications between the transit industry
and Members of Congress. Under this program APTA Business Members are asked
to maintain close contact over the next year with specific members of the
House/Senate as Congress considers the reauthorization of TEA 21 and other
important transportation legislation. Such contact could be by phone, fax,
e-mail, letters and/or personal visits.
Business Members have been sent contact
information on Congressional offices assigned to their particular company,
in its various locations, to "adopt." The initial assignments have
been based on a number of factors, including the need to cover as many districts
as possible, and the desire to spread out the coverage through APTA's membership.
Adjustments can be made as appropriate.
APTA will continue to support your efforts
through timely and strategic information available through APTA's web-based
Transit Action Center (found at www.apta.com). The Transit Action Center offers
a quick and efficient way to contact your Members of Congress by personalizing
pre-written letters that convey important and timely transit industry messages.
Please visit the site for sample correspondence, for key messages, and to
log any Congressional activities you participate in for APTA to track as an
example to other members.
Please note that APTA encourages you to
have regular, ongoing contact with all members of the House and Senate where
your business has a presence. The Adopt-A-District program represents an effort
to establish accountability and to assure that APTA's message is taken to
all Congressional offices. In addition, it provides an opportunity for the
transit industry to cultivate relationships with key policy makers across
the country.
This is a critical time for the public
transportation industry to make its best pitch to members of Congress. Your
commitment to this important project is critical to the success of the transit
industry in achieving its federal investment goals.
